GAZOO Racing (GR) announced on Mar. 13 that it has unveiled a partially upgraded GR Yaris, with orders now being accepted at Toyota vehicle dealers across Japan and sales set to begin on April 6.
The new Type 26 GR Yaris builds on the model’s tradition of incorporating improvements based on experience from circuit racing and rally competitions. The upgrades are intended to enhance performance and operability for both everyday drivers and motorsports enthusiasts.
Among the main changes is the introduction of a newly developed GR steering wheel, designed in collaboration with professional race drivers. The steering wheel features a reduced diameter for improved response, specially shaped grips for better control during cornering, and independently positioned illuminated switches for enhanced nighttime visibility. Electric power steering settings have also been modified using insights from motorsports, optimizing torsion-bar rigidity within the torque sensor and expanding the steering torque detection range to provide optimal assistance even under high-load conditions.
Certain trim levels now come standard with Bridgestone POTENZA RACE tires, which were developed through extensive field testing to deliver long-lasting high-grip performance. Adjustments to shock absorber damping characteristics further maximize tire performance. Additionally, factory-installed options have been updated so that seat heaters and a steering wheel heater are available even when selecting a vertical parking brake together with either the Navigation Package or Comfort Package.
The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices for the various trim levels range from 3,617,200 yen to 5,882,200 yen depending on configuration. Key specifications of the RZ “High performance” model include an in-line three-cylinder turbocharged engine producing up to 224 kW (304 PS), a choice between six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, sports four-wheel drive system with selectable modes, Torsen limited-slip differentials front and rear, MacPherson strut front suspension and double wishbone rear suspension.
GR said it intends to continue evolving the GR Yaris by entering it in races and incorporating feedback from a diverse range of drivers.
