Green SM, Indonesia’s first premium all-electric taxi service, has launched operations in Surabaya. The introduction of the service aims to offer quieter and more affordable transportation options for both residents and visitors, while also contributing to improved air quality in the city.
The launch event was attended by several local officials, including Agus Imam Sonhaji, Expert Staff to the Mayor for Development, Economy, and Finance; Trio Wahyu Bowo, Acting Head of the Surabaya Transportation Agency; Police Commissioner Endang Srie Narullita; Agus Hebi Djuniantoro, Head of the Surabaya Office of Industry and Manpower; H. M. Ali Affandi La Nyalla Mahmud Mattalitti, Chairman of the Surabaya Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN); Lt. Col. Ifan Alfa from Korem 084/BJ; as well as other municipal representatives and business community members.
Surabaya faces challenges with congestion and air pollution due to over 3.8 million registered vehicles in 2024, most being motorbikes or private cars. Green SM’s electric fleet is positioned as a sustainable alternative that supports both the city’s Smart City vision and Indonesia’s efforts toward reducing carbon emissions.
Green SM previously entered Jakarta in December 2024 with its VinFast electric taxis. The company expanded to Makassar and Bekasi earlier this month before launching in Surabaya. The expansion reflects a move from a gradual rollout to broader nationwide adoption of green mobility solutions.
Deny Tjia, Managing Director of Green SM Indonesia, stated: “Our expansion into Surabaya is more than just adding a new city, it reflects a deeper commitment to the people and rhythm of Indonesia’s most dynamic urban centers. Within just one month, we have expanded to Makassar, Bekasi, and now Surabaya, demonstrating both the strong demand for premium green mobility and our ability to scale rapidly. Surabaya, as eastern Java’s commercial hub and international gateway, is the ideal place to demonstrate that electric taxis are not only practical but also establish a new benchmark for sustainable urban mobility.”
As part of its launch campaign in Surabaya, Green SM is offering discounts on rides booked through its app between October 14-27. Passengers can receive up to IDR 50,000 off per ride during specified promotional periods.
GSM (Green Smart Mobility), which operates Green SM globally using VinFast electric vehicles exclusively for its fleets across Southeast Asia—including under different brand names such as Xanh SM in Vietnam and Laos—was founded by Pham Nhat Vuong who chairs Vingroup.
According to GSM’s mission statement: “GSM is committed to developing a future-ready mobility ecosystem while inspiring greener lifestyles in countries that are rapidly embracing sustainability.” The company emphasizes providing zero-emission transportation while fostering environmentally conscious communities wherever it operates.
Each ride with Green SM is presented not only as an option for convenience but also as support for cleaner air and smoother traffic conditions for future generations.
