Harvia Plc and Toyota Motor Corporation have collaborated to develop a concept model for what is claimed to be the world’s first hydrogen-powered sauna. This partnership merges Harvia’s expertise in saunas with Toyota’s hydrogen combustion technology, aiming to explore new uses for hydrogen and contribute to carbon neutrality.
The hydrogen sauna concept will be showcased at two events in Jyväskylä, Finland: the “World Sauna Forum” on June 4-5, 2025, and during “Rally Finland” from July 31 to August 2, 2025. The system uses hydrogen combustion to heat sauna stones, generating only steam and warm air without CO2 emissions.
“This collaboration with Toyota allows us to push the boundaries of sauna innovation and demonstrate our dedication to environmental responsibility,” said Timo Harvia, Head of Innovation and Technology at Harvia. “Toyota’s deep expertise in hydrogen handling and combustion gave us a safe and efficient way to pursue hydrogen as a clean energy source―something we might not have considered this soon without such a trusted partner.”
Mitsumasa Yamagata, President of Hydrogen Factory at Toyota, added that the project builds on trust established with the local community under Chairman Akio Toyoda’s leadership. He noted that partnering with Harvia opens new possibilities for future hydrogen use.
Harvia is recognized globally in the sauna market for its commitment to sustainable solutions. Meanwhile, Toyota continues its efforts towards carbon neutrality by promoting hydrogen utilization across various industries.
Both companies see this initiative as an opportunity not only to minimize environmental impact but also to create a unique sauna experience that respects tradition while looking forward.
