Samsung Electronics has announced the launch of its latest Onyx cinema LED screen in Europe at CineEurope 2025. This new screen, which debuted at CinemaCon 2025 in the U.S., aims to enhance cinema experiences across Europe by offering high dynamic range (HDR) content and immersive storytelling capabilities.

“Europe is a vital market for cinema innovation, and the launch of Onyx marks a new chapter in our commitment to premium movie experiences,” said Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. The company has partnered with leading cinema chains like Pathé Cinémas and creative entities such as Pixar to deliver enhanced cinematic journeys.

The Onyx screen is recognized as the world’s first DCI-certified cinema LED display, supporting frame rates up to 120Hz at 4K resolution. It offers HDR visuals with peak brightness levels of 300 nits, true black levels, and precise color accuracy. The screen comes in four standard sizes—5, 10, 14, and 20 meters—and includes flexible scaling options to maximize theater space without sacrificing image quality.

Designed for long-term use, the Onyx screen comes with an industry-first ten-year warranty for cinema LED screens. This warranty aims to reduce ownership costs and ensure future-proof investments for theater owners.

Samsung’s collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios continues to push standards for HDR cinema content. Pixar’s upcoming animated film “Elio,” premiering globally from June 18, will be available in a 4K theatrical HDR format compatible with Samsung Onyx screens. Pixar plans to master future films in DCI HDR supported by Onyx screens to maintain high brightness and fidelity.

Pixar also intends to install an Onyx display at its Emeryville campus in California for production purposes. This installation will support evaluating HDR color and brightness, conducting content quality tests, and hosting demonstration screenings.

“Samsung’s Onyx screens allow our Pixar artists to present their stories exactly as they envisioned them — vivid, dynamic and true to life,” said Jessie Schroeder, VP Post Production at Pixar Animation Studios. By mastering films in HDR with Onyx technology, Pixar aims to deliver next-generation cinematic experiences.

CineEurope attendees can experience the new Onyx firsthand at Samsung’s booth during the event from June 16–19 in Barcelona. CineEurope is a key convention for the European cinema industry that brings together theater operators, film studios, and industry leaders from across the region.
