Tencent Malaysia was awarded the “Malaysia Digital” (MD) status by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, according to an April 1 announcement. The recognition highlights Tencent’s ongoing commitment to supporting digital transformation in Malaysia and marks a significant step in its expansion as a regional hub for technology and innovation.
The MD status is seen as important for both Tencent and the country’s ambitions in digital growth. By establishing itself as a regional center, Tencent aims to provide technical support across business groups such as Games & Entertainment, Payments, Artificial Intelligence, and Cloud technologies. This move is expected to help local businesses improve their digital systems and foster greater value creation.
A recent example of this impact is Ryt Bank, Malaysia’s first AI-powered digital bank, which has adopted Tencent’s messaging and Real-Time Communication capabilities within its application. These tools are used to power intelligent chatbots and enhance security for financial transactions. The initiative forms part of broader efforts by Tencent to contribute to Southeast Asia’s expanding digital ecosystem.
Chief Executive Officer of MDEC Anuar Fariz Fadzil said, “WeChat Malaysia’s achievement of Malaysia Digital (MD) status reinforces Malaysia’s position and readiness as a strategic gateway for global technology companies to scale innovation and regional operations. MDEC remains committed to enabling a conducive and future-ready ecosystem that empowers companies like Tencent to thrive, while catalyzing knowledge transfer, high-value job creation, and the advancement of local digital capabilities. This collaboration clearly reflects our continued goal of championing Malaysia’s digital economy.”
Tencent also plans further collaborations with local partners. A recent Memorandum of Collaboration between Tourism Malaysia and Weixin Pay aims at improving travel experiences for visitors through seamless mobile payment solutions; these services saw tourist spending rise by 131% during Lunar New Year compared with the previous year.
Judy Wong, Country Manager of Tencent Malaysia said: “As Tencent accelerates its growth in Malaysia, securing the MD Status reflects our strategic alignment with the country’s digital transformation goals. By anchoring our technological and business operations in Malaysia, we are strengthening local capabilities while delivering innovation that serves millions of users worldwide.”
Following an office expansion in December 2025 that doubled its workforce—now more than 90% comprised of Malaysian professionals—Tencent continues growing its presence since entering the market in 2013.
