Tencent has released its annual Weixin Brand Protection Report, showcasing progress in combating counterfeiting and intellectual property abuse. The report outlines how Weixin enhanced its enforcement capabilities in 2024 through innovative solutions, proactive measures, and expanded collaboration with brand owners. These efforts aim to reduce misuse of Weixin by those engaged in illicit activities across both private and public features.

Weixin is a multifaceted communication service with private and public features like direct messaging, group chats, Official Accounts, and third-party Mini-Programs. Many leading brands collaborate with Weixin through its Brand Protection Platform (BPP), highlighting its dual value for brand protection and consumer connection.

Danny Marti, Head of Global Public Policy at Tencent, stated: “We’re proud of the progress Weixin has made this year in strengthening our tools, mobilizing our user communities, and expanding partnerships to tackle counterfeiting both online and offline. These efforts help brands connect with consumers more confidently while advancing the authentic experiences that power the global digital economy.”

The 2024 report highlights several key areas:

1. **Community-Driven Enforcement**: Weixin’s crowdsourced reporting system continues to set benchmarks for addressing counterfeit activity in private channels such as direct messages and group chats. In 2024, over 98% of takedown actions in private chats and 99.9% in group chats came from user submissions.

2. **Proactive Protection**: Tools like automatic keyword interception blocked thousands of suspicious activities daily. In 2024, Weixin shut down over 120,000 livestreaming rooms and removed more than 22,000 infringing short videos.

3. **Offline Enforcement**: Partnerships with brands and law enforcement led to support for 29 major offline cases—a rise in case volume by 20%—with a total case value reaching USD 300 million.

The BPP now supports over 640 brands across more than 30 industries globally. Tencent emphasizes building a healthy IP ecosystem that fosters creativity without limits. Danny Marti added: “Our approach enables authentic experiences and fosters sustainable industries that properly reward original thinking.”

Tencent’s broader IP vision aligns nearly a quarter of its portfolio with UN Sustainable Development Goals. Collaborations continue with entertainment giants among others to redefine digital experiences.
