Toyota Motor Corporation announced it will introduce the new RAV4 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in Japan starting March 9, 2026. The launch adds to Toyota’s sixth-generation RAV4 lineup, which includes both PHEV and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) models.

According to Toyota, the new RAV4 (PHEV) is designed for versatility, aiming to suit a variety of customer lifestyles while maintaining the established design features of previous RAV4 models. The HEV version was released in December 2025.

The PHEV variant uses a plug-in hybrid system with a large-capacity battery and supports high-output chargers. This setup increases the battery electric vehicle (BEV) driving range and overall output, offering improved environmental performance and enhanced off-road capabilities.

The GR SPORT grade has also been introduced for this model. It focuses on sporty styling as well as improved maneuverability and handling. The GR SPORT utilizes its drive battery to reinforce body rigidity and lower the center of gravity, while additional features such as performance dampers and braces further enhance stability.

Manufacturer’s suggested retail prices are set at 6 million yen for the Z grade and 6.3 million yen for the GR SPORT grade, including consumption tax but excluding recycling fees. Pricing may differ in Okinawa.

Toyota highlights several features of the new PHEV system: a maximum output of 242kW (329 PS), an increased BEV-mode driving range from approximately 95 km to about 150 km per full charge due to a larger battery and silicon carbide semiconductors in the power control unit. The power supply system allows electricity stored in the battery to be used for external purposes such as household appliances or during emergencies like power outages; under certain modes, it can provide electricity for up to seven days.

The Z grade features black accents exclusive to the PHEV version, while aerodynamic enhancements on the GR SPORT include front lip spoilers and wing-type rear spoilers that contribute to both appearance and functionality through wind tunnel testing.

Toyota expects monthly sales of around 700 units for the PHEV in Japan. A selection of genuine parts and accessories will be available online through “UPGRADE SELECTIONS by TOYOTA UPGRADE FACTORY” beginning spring 2026.

Production will take place at Toyota’s Takaoka Plant as well as Toyota Industries Corporation’s Nagakusa Plant.

“Achieving zero, and adding new value beyond it,” Toyota stated regarding its approach to sustainability initiatives. “As part of efforts to pass our beautiful ‘Home Planet’ to the next generation, Toyota has identified and is helping to solve issues faced by individuals and overall society, which Toyota calls ‘Achieving Zero,’ hoping to help reduce the negative impacts caused by these issues to people and the environment to zero. Additionally, Toyota is also looking ‘Beyond Zero’ to create and provide greater value by continuing to diligently seek ways to improve lives and society for the future.”

Toyota also emphasized its broader commitment: “Toyota Motor Corporation works to develop and manufacture innovative, safe and high-quality products and services that create happiness by providing mobility for all. We believe that true achievement comes from supporting our customers, partners, employees, and the communities in which we operate. Since our founding over 80 years ago in 1937, we have applied our Guiding Principles in pursuit of a safer, greener and more inclusive society. Today, as we transform into a mobility company developing connected, automated, shared and electrified technologies, we also remain true to our Guiding Principles and many of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals to help realize an ever-better world, where everyone is free to move.”
