Toyota Motor Corporation announced it will launch the new RAV4 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in Japan on March 9, 2026. The model will be available in two grades: the Z, which features distinct black accents, and the GR SPORT, designed to enhance maneuverability and sporty appeal.

The RAV4 (PHEV) builds on Toyota’s “Life is an Adventure” concept and aims to serve various customer lifestyles while retaining the core design of previous RAV4 models. According to Toyota, the recently introduced hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) version of the RAV4, released in December 2025, has received a positive response from customers.

The new PHEV version uses a plug-in hybrid system based on an energy-efficient platform with a large-capacity drive battery and support for high-output chargers. This configuration increases both the battery electric vehicle (BEV)-mode driving range and output. Toyota reports that this allows for powerful driving performance while addressing environmental considerations.

For customers interested in diverse styles, Toyota has added the GR SPORT grade to bring aspects of its sports car series to more buyers. The company says this variant offers improved stability and controllability through enhancements like special suspension tuning and body rigidity improvements using the drive battery as a structural member.

“PHEVs are one of the many important powertrains for achieving carbon neutrality. Going forward, Toyota intends to continue its multi-pathway approach, offering diverse choices to customers around the world under its new brand spirit of ‘to you’―car-making for a specific someone,” according to Toyota’s statement.

In terms of specifications, the RAV4 (PHEV) features a maximum output of 242kW (329 PS), which supports strong off-road performance. The BEV-mode driving range is approximately 150 km per full charge—an increase from about 95 km in earlier models—thanks in part to higher battery capacity and use of silicon carbide semiconductors in its power control unit.

The model also incorporates a power supply system that can be used beyond vehicle operation. Owners can utilize stored electricity via an outlet installed in the luggage area or by plugging a connector into the standard charging inlet to provide up to 1,500W through an external socket. In emergencies such as power outages or disasters, Toyota says that with HV Power Supply Mode activated, electricity can be supplied for roughly 6.5 days at a continuous load of 400W from a fully charged battery and full fuel tank; switching to Power Supply Time Priority Mode extends this period up to about seven days.

Base monthly sales volume for Japan is set at approximately 700 units for the PHEV model. Retail prices are listed at six million yen for the Z grade and 6.3 million yen for GR SPORT; separate pricing applies in Okinawa and recycling fees are not included.

Production will take place at Takaoka Plant operated by Toyota Motor Corporation and Nagakusa Plant managed by Toyota Industries Corporation.

Toyota also plans to offer genuine parts and accessories online via UPGRADE SELECTIONS by TOYOTA UPGRADE FACTORY starting spring 2026. Upgrades aimed at enhancing functionality will become available sequentially through their website: https://factory.kinto-jp.com/products/vehicle/RV006/.

According to information published by Toyota Motor Corporation, since its founding in 1937 it has focused on producing innovative vehicles that contribute toward safety, environmental sustainability, and social inclusivity while supporting United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. “As part of efforts to pass our beautiful ‘Home Planet’ to the next generation,” states Toyota’s release, “Toyota has identified and is helping to solve issues faced by individuals and overall society…hoping to help reduce negative impacts caused by these issues…to zero.” The company further notes ongoing efforts “to create and provide greater value by continuing…to improve lives and society for the future.”
