Toyota Motor Corporation has unveiled the new Hilux at a world premiere event in Bangkok, Thailand. The launch includes a battery electric vehicle (BEV) model as part of Toyota’s strategy to deploy various powertrains globally, aiming for carbon neutrality through a multi-pathway approach. Toyota plans to introduce the new Hilux models across Asia starting in 2026, with diesel versions set for release in Japan by mid-2026.
The company emphasized its commitment to developing vehicles that meet local energy conditions and customer needs. The new Hilux lineup will eventually include a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) model, scheduled for introduction in Europe and Oceania from 2028.
The BEV version of the Hilux, presented in Thailand, features a lithium-ion battery with 59.2 kWh capacity and an estimated driving range exceeding 300 kilometers according to NEDC standards. It uses high-output eAxles on both front and rear for all-wheel drive capability and offers a maximum system output of 144 kW.
During the announcement event, Simon Humphries, Chief Branding Officer at Toyota Motor Corporation, reflected on the longstanding partnership between Toyota and Thailand: “Toyota has had a close partnership with Thailand for over 60 years. Since the very beginning, this has been not simply an investment, but a partnership. And that partnership has become a friendship.”
Humphries highlighted the significance of Thailand as Toyota’s first production site outside Japan in Asia and noted that more than 13 million vehicles have been produced there over six decades: “What we have achieved here is proof that global success comes from local strength. People in 133 countries around the world now benefit from that the fruits of our partnership.”
He also acknowledged Akio Toyoda’s role in strengthening ties with Thailand through leadership of projects like IMV—under which Hilux became part of a global platform—and shared Toyoda’s perspective: “He often says that ‘we want to give back to Thailand’. Over the years, our relationship with Thailand has grown beyond economic exchange, to cultural exchange.”
Former sumo champion Hakuho Sho participated as guest during the event and stated: “Sumo is about purity. It’s training not only for physical strength but also for mental strength. I believe promoting sumo will deliver hope to resolve discrimination and prejudice around the world.”
Toyota continues its focus on offering multiple electrified options suited to different markets rather than relying on one solution alone. According to information published by Toyota about their Beyond Zero initiative, this strategy is intended not just to achieve zero emissions but also add value beyond environmental goals by addressing broader social issues.
In line with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Toyota aims to contribute positively through its products and services worldwide as outlined on their SDGs Initiatives page.
The ninth generation Hilux reflects ongoing changes driven by customer feedback while maintaining durability and reliability known throughout its history since 1968.
